about Montessori Philosophy

Montessori philosophy and education are Internationally recognized and applied all over the world. The Method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, who became the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome , Medical School in 1896.

Dr. Maria Montessori was a pioneer in special education for children with developmental delays. She was very successful in teaching children most believed were impossible to teach how to read and write.
In 1907 Dr. Maria Montessori set up a school in a poverty-stricken area of Rome for children between the ages of two and six. She saw this as an opportunity to apply her ideas and experience into work with children without developmental delays.  Through her scientific observations of the children’s ability to absorb knowledge from their environment she developed what became the Montessori method of education.

Dr. Montessori emphasized that education should be an aid to life. She believed that the most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. Dr. Montessori observed that children have exceptional sensitivities at different periods of their development. A carefully prepared learning environment assists in nurturing and satisfying children’s needs at any particular stage of development, enabling them to develop to their fullest potential. Montessori materials are designed to help children learn academic skills with ease and enthusiasm, but also to cultivate concentration, motivation, self-discipline, respect for others and the world, and a love of learning.

Is Montessori for every child?

The Montessori method is proven to be a very successful and comprehensive educational system. The Montessorians do not look upon it as the one and only right method, or a miraculous solution for every child.

Personality, temperament, family background, and parent’s expectations may influence a child’s response to the Montessori environment. If a child is not able to benefit from the Montessori method and environment, this may indicate that another type of environment is more suitable and the child will thrive in a different education system.
